Samuel Rutherford on the Loveliness of Christ

“This soul of ours hath love, and cannot but love some fair one; and 0, what a fair 0ne, what an only 0ne, what an excellent, lovely, ravishing 0ne is Jesus! put the beauty of ten thousand thousand worlds, of paradises like the garden of Eden in one; put all trees, all flowers, all smells, all colours, all tastes, all joys, all sweetness, all loveliness in one; 0, what a fair and excellent thing would that be? And yet it would be less to that fair and dearest Well-Beloved Christ, than one drop of rain to the whole seas, rivers, lakes, and fountains of ten thousand earths.”
Samuel Rutherford
Amen! Thanks for sharing this wonderful quote Mr. Konvalin!
"My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the King: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into Thy lips: therefore God hath blessed Thee for ever."
--Psalm 45:1-2
O, how we should praise God that He has revealed Himself to us!
When I think of how infinitely holy God is and what a vile sinner I am, I stand amazed that I don't burn up before Him.
But I know that it is only because Jesus became a man and lived a perfect life and then went to the cross where He bore the full penalty for my sins that I can come into God's presence.
"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:"
--1 Peter 3:18
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."
--Romans 5:2
Jesus has taken away my filthy garments and has clothed me in His righteousness!
I am accepted in the presence of the holy God in Him---the Beloved Son!
". . .He hath made us accepted in the Beloved." --Ephesians 1:6
Blessed be God, that because He chose us and quickened us we now can see in Jesus our perfect substitute and call Him our beloved too!
"His mouth is most sweet: yea, He is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem."
--The Song of Solomon 5:16
"O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together. For how great is His goodness, and how great is His beauty!..." -- Psalm 34:3+Zechariah 9:17
"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."
--2 Corinthians 4:6
O, what it is know our Lord! He is the rose of Sharon; the Pearl of great price for whom we readily give up the all vain treasures of this world!
"Unto you therefore which believe He is precious:"
--1 Peter 2:7
Christ is our life--our all.
We exclaim with Paul:
"Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift."
2 Corinthians 9:15
Grace and Peace,
John
