Thomas Watson on The Word

“All true solid comfort is fetched out of the Word. The Word (as Chrysostom saith) is a spiritual garden; and the promises are the fragrant flowers or spices in this garden.”
Thomas Watson

“The Word supplies us with an unerring chart by which to steer through the dangerous sea of life. If we sincerely and diligently follow, it will deliver us from disastrous rocks and submerged reefs and direct us safely to the heavenly harbor. That Word has all the instructions we need for every problem, and every emergency we may be called upon to face. That Word has been given to us "that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good work" (2 Timothy 3:17). How thankful we should be that the Triune God has favored us with such a Word.”

Alexander Smellie on The Word of God

“I have no need to go to the loneliness of Sinai to meet with God. I find holy ground much nearer home. But I wonder whether I put my shoes off my feet.
He reveals Himself to me in His written Word. It is His sanctuary. By its agency my deepest life is created, quickened, sustained. Listening to it the saints have heard the very voice of their Lord; and it is associated with the faith and purity and joy of many centuries of Christians. But do I never raise a laugh by my grotesque and frivolous use of the words of Scripture? And, whenever I open the Book, do I remember that God has breathed the Spirit of Life into its chapters and verses? Mine is culpable levity.”

"If a man believed the threatnings of the word of God, he would tremble, and fly to the promises for refuge."

“The word of God must be nearer to us than our friends, dearer to us than our lives, sweeter to us than our liberty, and pleasanter to us than all earthly comforts.”
John Mason

“The Word written is our pillar of fire to guide us. It shows us what rocks we are to avoid; it is the map by which we sail to the new Jerusalem.”
Thomas Watson
Thomas Watson on the Love of The Word
Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: The Word, Thomas Watson | Posted On Monday, August 29, 2016 at 5:30 AM
“Again, do we love the holiness of the Word (Psa. 119:140)? The Word is preached to beat down sin and advance holiness. Do we love it for its spirituality and purity? Many love the Word preached only for its eloquence and notion. They come to a sermon as to a performance (Ezek. 33:31,32) or as to a garden to pick flowers, but not to have their lusts subdued or their hearts bettered. These are like a foolish woman who paints her face but neglects her health.”
Thomas Watson
John Jewel on the Word of God

“The word of God teacheth lowliness of mind; it teacheth us to know ourselves. If we learn not humility, we learn nothing. Although we seem to know somewhat, yet know we not in such sort as we ought to know.”
John Jewel

“Let us, therefore, foresake the vanity of the crowd and their false teachings, and turn back to the word delivered to us from the beginning.”

Jeremiah Burroughs on The Word

"The Word must be received with love and joy. It is not enough for you to be convinced of the authority of it and to think: "I must yield to it. This is the Word of God and if I do not yield to it, I must expect the plagues and judgements of God to follow it." That is not enough, but you must yield to it with love and with joy. Unless you receive the Word with love and with joy, it is not sanctified. You do not sanctify God's name, nor is it sanctified unto you."
Jeremiah Burroughs

Henry Law on Family Worship, Spiritual Instruction and the Word of God
Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: Family Worship, Henry Law, Spiritual Instruction, The Word | Posted On Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 5:30 AM
"Family Worship is not restricted to prayer and praise. Spiritual instruction should be sought—a portion of the life-giving Word should be read and opened out in simplicity and reverence. The Bible should have its due place. Here is a Book suited for every age and every station. No period can say that there is no further room for its instructions. The AGED have not advanced beyond its sacred teaching. The YOUNGEST should be like Timothy, early instructed in the truths which are able to make wise unto salvation. The RICH may gather here treasures of knowledge surpassing all earthly pelf. The POOR may receive wisdom which may enrich them to eternal life. The highest GENIUS may find revelations which no intellect of man could have devised. The SIMPLEST in mind may learn the story of redeeming love. Ignorance of Scripture is the malady and the misery of this age. It is alike its peril and its shame. The man who is a walking Bible is a grand power. Thus there is no household which does not need Bible-teaching; and there should be no Family Worship in which such is not imparted."
Henry Law

"Oh, the mysteries, the excellencies, the glories that are in the word! Ah! no book to this book, none so useful, none so needful, none so delightful, none so necessary to make you happy, and to keep you happy as this."

John Owen on The Church and The Word

"God speaks by the Church (the true Church we mean); but He speaks nothing by her but what He speaks in the Scriptures, which she does only ministerially declare to us; and therefore the authority of God and His law is above hers, who, though she publish, yet did not make it, but is herself subject to it."
John Owen
Jeremiah Burroughs on Believers and the Word of God

"A gracious heart so esteems its union with Christ and the work that God sets it about that it will not willingly suffer anything to come in to choke it or deaden it. A Christian is desirous that the Word of God should take such full possession as to divide between soul and spirit (Hebrews 4:12), but he would not allow the fear and noise of evil tidings to take such a hold in his soul as to make a division and struggling there, like the twins in Rebekah's womb."

Isaac Backus on Reliance on the Word of God

"How are men deluded to think they do God service,
when they violate his word"
“By which it appears, that to fix our dependence upon any
other beside the divine Being, and to pursue any method beside his directions,
to obtain the necessaries and comforts of life, is whoredom; and does not the
chief sin of the mother of harlots lie in her fixing this dependence upon the
kings of the earth? Rev. 18. 3–13.”
