John Owen on Substitutionary Atonement

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Friday, July 17, 2020 at 5:30 AM

“That the way in general, whereby the Son of God being incarnate was to save lost sinners, was by a substitution of Himself, according to the design and appointment of God, in the room of those whom He was to save: “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteous-ness of God in him” (2Co 5:21). “

John Owen on Unity

"I do verily believe that when God shall accomplish it (unity) it will be the effect of love, and not the cause of love. It will proceed from love, before it brings forth love."

John Owen on Thinking on God

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Monday, November 26, 2018 at 5:30 AM

“It is utterly impossible we should walk before God, unto his glory, or with any real peace, comfort, or satisfaction in our own souls, unless our minds are continually exercised with thoughts of his almighty power.”

John Owen on Prayer

“This holy complacency, this rest and sweet repose of mind, is the foundation of the delight of believers in this duty. They do not pray only because it is their duty so to do, nor yet because they stand in need of it, so as that they cannot live without it, but they have delight in it; and to keep them from it is all one as to keep them from their daily food and refreshment.”

John Owen on Thoughts and Their Fruit

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Monday, November 5, 2018 at 5:30 AM

“The mind of man is covered with thoughts, as a tree with blossoms. Most of them fall off, vanish, and come to nothing, end in vanity; and sometimes where the mind doth most abound with them there is the least fruit; the sap of the mind is wasted and consumed in them. Howbeit there is no fruit which actually we bring forth, be it good or bad, but it proceeds from some of these thoughts.”

John Owen on The Word of God and LIfe

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Monday, October 29, 2018 at 5:30 AM

“When men feed on the word, it is turned into a principle of life, spiritual strength, and growth within; which a taste of it only will not give. As food, when it is digested, turns into flesh and blood and spirits, so doth the word, and Christ therein, unto the souls of men spiritually.”

John Owen on Preservation of True Religion

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Monday, October 22, 2018 at 5:30 AM

“Men do but deceive themselves who suppose that the purity of religion will be preserved in confessions and canons, whilst some make it their business to corrupt its truth, and few or none make it their business to preserve its power.”

John Owen on the Result of Time with Christ

"The one who makes it his daily business to eat daily from the tree of life, will have no appetite for other fruit, even though the tree that bears them seems to stand in the midst of paradise"

John Owen on Prayer

"He who prays as he ought will endeavor to live as he prays. This none can do who doth not with diligence keep his heart unto the things he hath prayed about. To pray earnestly and live carelessly is to proclaim that a man is not spiritually minded in his prayer."

John Owen on Happiness and Christ

"It is a vain thing for any to suppose that they place their chiefest happiness in being for ever in the presence of Christ, who care not at all to be with him here as they may."

John Owen on the Glory of Christ

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Friday, February 12, 2016 at 5:30 AM

“The glory of Christ’s exaltation cannot be seen or understood in this world except by faith fixing itself on divine revelation.  We cannot behold the glory of Christ by conjuring up pictures of Him in the mind and by trying to form the shape of a person in heaven in our imaginations.  The way to behold the glory of Christ is by the steady exercise of faith on the revelation of this glory of Christ given to us in Scripture.  It is our duty, therefore, constantly to mediate on the glory of Christ.  This will fill us with a joy which will,  in turn, move us to meditate on His glory more and more.”

“We are not so foolish as to think we can learn a trade without the diligent use of helps.  Shall we think that we may become spiritually skillful and wise in the understanding of this mystery without making any real effort to use the helps God has given us?  The most important of them is fervent prayer.  Pray with Paul that ‘the eyes of your understanding may be enlightened to behold’ the glory of God in Christ”

“It is by beholding the glory of Christ by faith that we are spiritually edified and built up in tis world, for as we behold His glory, the life and power of faith grow stronger and stronger.  It is by faith that we grow to love Christ.”

“No man shall ever behold the glory of Christ by sight in heaven who does not, in some measure, behold it by faith in this world.  Grace is necessary preparation for glory and faith for sight.  The soul unprepared by grace and faith is not capable of seeing the glory of Christ in heaven.”

“Only a sight of His glory, and nothing else, will truly satisfy God’s people.  The hearts of believers are like a magnetized needle which cannot rest until it is pointing north.  So also, a believer, magnetized by the love of Christ, will always be restless until he or she comes to Christ and beholds His glory.”

John Owen on Sanctification

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Friday, October 2, 2015 at 5:30 AM

“The growth of trees and plants takes place so slowly that it is not easily seen.  Daily we notice little change.  But, in course of time, we see that a great change has taken place.  So it is with grace.  Sanctification is a progressive, lifelong work (Proverbs. 4:18).  It is an amazing work of God's grace and it is a work to be prayed for (Romans. 8:27).”
