John Fawcett on Ones Thoughts

“It is much to be lamented—that those who profess a sincere attachment to the Redeemer, should have their thoughts so little employed about Him. Where a multitude of worldly cares, desires, fears and hopes prevail in the mind—they cumber and perplex it—so as to bring on a great disinclination to spiritual meditation.”
John Fawcett
I think this is true more today than ever with all the increasing plethora of gadgets that come from living in a technological age.
It's so easy to be distracted even for people like me who are somewhat (shall we say) technologically naive (at least compared to what some people, such as yourself, know:).
But regardless of the increasing distractions we may have to deal with our obligation to spiritual meditation hasn't changed.
MEDITATION... hmm, now there's a word that I believe is often misunderstood and misapplied among the professing church.
I think we have to be careful here that we get our definition from Scripture and not the world.
Biblical meditation is not some ethereal, detached, lighter than air, emotional experience (that sounds like I might have just defined what worship is for some people too ;)
Psalm 49:3 says "My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding."
So our meditation needs to be with wisdom and understanding; the wisdom and understanding that comes from God's Word.
Because "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." Proverbs 9:10
Psalm 1, when speaking about the godly man, says in verse 2 "But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night."
So Biblical meditation isn't just some activity we do in our 15 minute devotions (is that too long ;) but rather our lives are to be characterized by delighting and meditating in the Law of the LORD.
This is convicting to me because I know I fall short, but this is my goal and I pray that God will give me the grace to do this so that I can truly say with the Psalmist "O how I love Thy law! it is my meditation all the day." Psalm 119:97
I know that Mr. Fawcett was primarily talking about meditating upon our Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ, but I think this is related because If we love and meditate upon our Savior shall we not also love and meditate upon His law?
Did He not Himself say "If ye love me, keep my commandments." John 14:15
So, I think meditating upon God and meditating upon His Law go hand in hand and we should not separate the two.
But I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here and I'm very grateful to God for my father teaching me and you teaching me these important Scriptural truths.
Writing them out helps me to understand them more clearly and has the added advantage that If I say something wrong or just not quite right, you can correct me.
What helps you to avoid being distracted and meditate upon God and His Word Mr. Konvalin?
I would appreciate if you would tell me as well as share any articles that have helped you to understand more fully what Biblical meditation is.
I feel I only just started to scratch the surface and I have much more to learn.
The puritans had much to say on the subject didn't they?
I would be grateful for any recommendations.
It's so easy to get distracted with so many things, things which might not be bad in themselves, but which take away our minds from what's most important: knowing and glorifying God.
Even Christian service can be a distraction sometimes can't it?
I'm afraid that many times when I'm seeking to serve my Lord I become cumbered about as Martha was in Luke 10:40
And I need to listen to Jesus words "thou art careful and troubled about many things:
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."
"One thing is needful" and what is that one thing but to sit at Jesus' feet and learn of Him.
"One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple."
Psalm 27:4
Grace and Peace,
John
