Abraham Wright on Hating Sin

“None can hate it [sin] but that love the law of God; for all hatred comes from love. A natural man may be angry with his sin, but hate it he cannot; nay, he may leave it, but not loathe it; if he did, he would loathe all sin as well as any one sin.”
Abraham Wright
(1611-1690)
This reminds of the text of your sermon Mr. Konvalin in Romans 12:9 where the Bible commands us to "abhor that which is evil;.." but this hatred springs out of love, ("Let love be without dissimulation...") and is a mark that our love is Biblical.
Because Biblical love (as you made the point so clearly) is a love that is God-centered.
A love that begins by loving God with all one's heart, soul and might (Due 6:5)
Psalm 97:10 says "Ye that love the LORD, hate evil:.."
It necessarily follows that we must love God's law as it is the reflection of His perfect character and the standard by which we know what is evil.
"Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way."
Psalm 119:104
Through the revelation of Scripture we know the false ways we are to hate and by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit we can hate sin starting in our own lives.
The natural (unregenerate) man lacks this. He has the law written in his heart as Romans 2:15 tells us, but Eph. 4:18 makes clear that his understanding is darkened and his heart is blind. We also read in Titus 1:15 that "Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled."
So, to begin with, the natural man's understanding of the Law of God is flawed by his sin and spiritual blindness. This being the case he can NOT hate sin as God requires.
But, by the grace of God, it is different with us. To quote a favorite verse "We love Him, because He first loved us." 1 John 4:19
Because of God's eternal love for us we now love Him because He converted us, regenerated us, gave us new hearts through the agency of the Holy Spirit, that we might know Him and love Him.
And because we love Him and His law we will hate what He hates.
Again, what does Psalm 97:10 say? " Ye that love the Lord, hate evil:.."
Jesus is our perfect model for doing this. This reminds me of that verse you shared in your sermon: "But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I [Jesus] also hate." Rev. 2:6
Jesus is the only one who has ever followed perfectly the command to "Hate the evil and love the good,.." Amos 5:15
The last part of the quote was convicting though in that it directly implies that to hate sin means we must "loathe all sins as well as any one sin."
As you noted in your sermon there are some big sins that we as a church may be good at loudly denouncing such as adultery but others such as gluttony which we may tolerate in ourselves.
But the good news is that God's Spirit dwells in us and He will help us to hate sin as He does though we won't do this perfectly till glory.

P.S. I forgot to ask before Mr. Konvalin but if it's not to much trouble could you please send me a link to the article you mentioned in your sermon about loving unhypocritically.
John: I will email you the link to the article. Also, no problems here with long comments.
