"The sunshine is always sweeter after we have been in the shade; so will you find Jesus in returning to him. True it is better never to wander; but when you have wandered, the sooner you return the happier you will be."

"Lord, put me into thy service where and when thou pleasest. In thy hand all my qualities will be put to their appropriate end. Let me then have no anxieties."

"The quiet conversion of one sinner after another under the ordinary ministry of the gospel must always be regarded with feelings of satisfaction and gratitude by the ministers and disciples of Christ."

"Set NOT your hearts on the flowers of this world. They shall fade and die. Prize the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley. He changes not! Live nearer to Christ than to any person on this earth; so that when they are taken, you may have Him to love and lean upon."

"Remember you are God's sword -- His instrument -- I trust a chosen vessel unto Him to bear His name. In great measure, according to the purity and perfections of the instrument will be the success. It is not great talents God blesses so much as a greg likeness to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God."

"Strange, that following the Lamb of God should endanger our very life ; yet in how many ages of the Church it has been so !" The time will come when whosoever killeth you. shall think that he doeth God service." What a cloud of witnesses has Scotland seen, all saying, like Thomas, ' Let us go and die with him!" Ah, we do not know the value of Christ, if we will not cleave to him unto death!"

"The nearer you take anything to the light, the darker its spots will appear; and the nearer you live to God, the more you will see your own utter vileness."

Robert Murray M'Cheyne on Temptation

"I am tempted to think that I am now an established Christian,--that I have overcome this or that lust so long,--that I have got into the habit of the opposite grace,--so that there is no fear; I may venture very near the temptation--nearer than other men. This is a lie of Satan. One might as well speak of gunpowder getting by habit of resisting fire, so as not to catch spark. As long as powder is wet, it resists the spark; but when it becomes dry, it is ready to explode at the first touch. As long as the Spirit dwells in my heart, He deadens me to sin, so that, if lawfully called through temptation, I may reckon upon God carrying me through. But when the Spirit leaves me, I am like dry gunpowder. Oh for a sense of this!"

"Most of God's people are contented to be saved from the hell that is without; they are not so anxious to be saved from the hell that is within."
