G.K. Chesterton on Politics

"The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected."

G. K. Chesterton

John Newton on Politics and the Church

"The whole system of my politics is summed up in this one verse, 'The Lord reigns! Let the nation's tremble!'  Psalm 99:1  The times look awfully dark indeed; and as the clouds grow thicker - the stupidity of the nation seems proportionally to increase.  If the Lord had not a remnant here, I would have very formidable apprehensions.  But He loves His redeemed children; some are sighing and mourning before Him, and I am sure He hears their sighs, and sees their tears.  I trust there is mercy in store for us at the bottom; but I expect a shaking time before things get aright channel - before we are humbled, and are taught to give Him the glory.

The state of the nation, the state of the churches - both are deplorable!  Those who should be praying - are disputing and fighting among themselves!  Alas!  How many professors are more concerned for the mistakes of government - than for their own sins!  'Hallelujah!  For our Lord God Almighty reigns!'  Revelation 19:6”

G.K. Chesterton on Politics

"The real evil of our Party System is commonly stated wrong. It was stated wrong by Lord Rosebery, when he said that it prevented the best men from devoting themselves to politics, and that it encouraged a fanatical conflict. I doubt whether the best men ever would devote themselves to politics. The best men devote themselves to pigs and babies and things like that. And as for the fanatical conflict in party politics, I wish there was more of it. The real danger of the two parties with their two policies is that they unduly limit the outlook of the ordinary citizen. They make him barren instead of creative, because he is never allowed to do anything except prefer one existing policy to another. We have not got real Democracy when the decision depends upon the people. We shall have real Democracy when the problem depends upon the people. The ordinary man will decide not only how he will vote, but what he is going to vote about."

Charles Spurgeon on Christian Precepts in All Areas of Life, Even Politics

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 5:30 AM

“I long for the day when the precepts of the Christian religion shall be the rule among all classes of men,in all transactions. I often hear it said " Do not bring religion into politics." This is precisely where it ought to be brought, and set there in the face of all men as on a candlestick. I would have the Cabinet and the Members of Parliament do the work of the nation as before the Lord, and I would have the nation, either in making war or peace, consider the matter by the light of righteousness. "We are to deal with other nations about this or that upon the principles of the New Testament I thank God that I have lived to see the attempt made in one or two instances, and I pray that the principle may become dominant and permanent We have had enough of clever men without conscience, let us now see what honest, God-fearing men will do. But we are told that we must study "British interests, as if it were not always to a nation's truest interest to do righteousness. "But we must follow out our policy." I say, No! Let the policies which are founded on wrong be cast like idols to the moles and to the bats. Stand to that most admirable of policies,—" As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise." Whether we are kings, or queens, or prime ministers, or members of parliament, or crossing sweepers, this is our rule if we are Christians.”

John Taylor on "Manufacturing Mania"

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , , | Posted On Friday, October 18, 2013 at 7:31 AM

"Still more hopeless is the promise of the manufacturing mania, "that it will make us independent of foreign nations," when combined with its other promise of providing a market for agriculture.  The promise of a market, as we see in the experience of England, can only be made good, by reducing the agricultural class to a tenth part of the nation, and increasing manufacturers by great manufactural exportations.  This reduction can only be accomplished by driving or seducing above nine-tenths of the agricultural class, into other classes, and the increase by a brave and patriotic navy.  Discontent and misery will be the fruits of the first operation, and these would constitute the most forlorn hope for success in the second.  By exchanging hardy, honest and free husbandmen for the classes necessary to reduce the number of agriculturalists, low enough to raise the prices of their products shall we become more independent of foreign nations?  What!  Secure our independence by bankers and capitalists?  Secure our independence by impoverishing discouraging and annihilating none-tenths of our sound yeomanry?  By turning them into swindlers, and dependents on a master capitalist for daily bread?

The manufacturing mania accuses the agricultural spirit of avarice and want of patriotism, whilst it offers to bribe it by  a prospect of better prices, whittles down independence into cargoes of fancy goods, and proposes to metamorphose nine-tenths of the hardy sons of the forest into everything but heroes, for the grand end of gratifying the avarice of a capitalist, monied or paper interest"

John Taylor on the Political State of Agriculture

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 7:33 AM

"The political causes which oppress agriculture have been considered, before domestic habits which vitiate it, to guard against the error of an opinion, that the latter may be removed, whilst the former continue.  So long as the laws make it more profitable to invest capital in speculations without labour, than in agriculture with labour; and so long as the liberty of pursuing one's own interest exist; the two strongest human propensities, a love of wealth, and a love of ease, will render it impossible"

R.J. Rushdoony on Politics and Character

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Monday, December 5, 2011 at 8:00 AM

"Politics cannot produce character: Christianity must. The decline of faith is a decline of character and a decline of character is the forerunner of political decay and collapse. Christianity has an obligation to train a people in the fundamentals of God's grace and law, and to make them active and able champions of true political liberty and order."

R. J. Rushdoony
