Martyn Lloyd-Jones on Grace

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Friday, August 31, 2012 at 8:00 AM

“It is grace at the beginning, and grace at the end. So that when you and I come to lie upon our death beds, the one thing that should comfort and help and strengthen us there is the thing that helped us in the beginning. Not what we have been, not what we have done, but the Grace of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. The Christian life starts with grace, it must continue with grace, it ends with grace. Grace wondrous grace. By the grace of God I am what I am. Yet not I, but the Grace of God which was with me”
Martyn Lloyd-Jones

"Consider but that we have but a little time in this world.  If you are godly you will never suffer but in this world......These afflictions are but for a moment."
Jeremiah Burroughs
(The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, Pg 211)

Jeremiah Burroughs on Attaining Contentment

"The consideration of the abundance of mercies that God bestows and we enjoy.  It is a saying of Luther:  "The sea of God's mercies should swallow up all our particulate afflictions."  Name any particule affliction that is upon you:  There is a sea of mercy to swallow it up.  If you pour a pailful of water on the floor of your house, it makes a great show, but if you throw it into the sea, there is no sign of it."
Jeremiah Burroughs
(The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, Pg 209)

Jeremiah Burroughs on Attaining Contentment

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Monday, August 27, 2012 at 8:00 AM

"We should consider, in all out wants and inclinations to discontent, the greatness of the mercies that we have, and the meanness of the things we lack.  The things we lack, if we are godly, are things of very small moment in comparison to the things we have, and the things we have are things of very great moment."
Jeremiah Burroughs
(The Rare Jewel Of Christian Contentment, Pg 207)

Jeremiah Burroughs on Contentment and Murmuring

"As contentment argues much grace, and strong grace, and beautiful grace, so murmuring argues much corruption, and strong corruption, and very vile corruptions in your heart."

Jeremiah Burroughs on Contentment

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 8:00 AM

"If I become content by having my desire satisfied, that is only self-love, but when I am contented with the hand of God, and am willing to be at his disposal, that comes from from my love to God.  In having my desire satisfied, I am contented through self-love, but through the grace of contentment I come to be contented out of love to God, and is it not better to be contented out of love to God, than from a principle of self-love?"
Jeremiah Burroughs
(The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, Pg 131)

Jeremiah Burroughs on Contentment as Worship

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Monday, August 20, 2012 at 8:00 AM

In speaking of the excellence of contentment:

"1. By contentment we come to give God the worship that is due Him.  It is a special part of the devine worship that we owe to God, to be content in a Christian way, as has been shown to you.  I say it is a special part of the devine worship that the creature owes to the infinite Creator, in that I tender the respect that is due from me to the Creator.  The word the Greeks have that signifies 'to worship' is the same as to come and crouch before someone, as if a dog should come crouching to you. and be willing to lie down at your feet.  So the creature in apprehension of its own baseness, and the infinite excellence that is in God above it, when it comes to worship God, comes and crouches to this God, and lies down at the feet of God:  then the creature worships God. "
Jeremiah Burroughs

“Instruction, advice, and commands will profit little, unless they are backed up by the pattern of your own life. Your children will never believe you are serious and obey you, so long as your actions contradict your counsel.”

J.C. Ryle on Christianity and its Fruit

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , , | Posted On Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 8:00 AM

"The Christianity which is from above will always be known by its fruits. It will produce in the person who has it repentance, faith, hope, love, humility, spirituality, kindness, self-denial, unselfishness, forgiving spirit, moderation, truthfulness, hospitality, and patience. The degree in which these various graces appear may vary in different believers. The germ and seeds of them will be found in all who are the children of God. By their fruits they will be known. Is this your faith? If not, you should doubt whether it is authentic."
J.C. Ryle

J.C Ryle on False Teaching

Posted by Bluegrass Endurance | Labels: , | Posted On Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 8:00 AM

"If we would hold fast that which is good, we must never tolerate or support any doctrine which is not the pure doctrine of Christ’s Gospel. There is a hatred which is downright charity – that is the hatred of erroneous doctrine. There is an intolerance which is downright praiseworthy – that is the intolerance of false teaching in the pulpit. Who would ever think of tolerating a little poison given to them day by day? If men come among you who do not preach “all the counsel of God,” who do not preach of Christ, sin, holiness, of ruin, redemption, and regeneration, and do not preach of these things in a Scriptural way, you ought to cease to hear them."
J.C. Ryle
